The Walt Disney Imagineering Imaginations Competition
I have always been an avid Disney fan, but not in the way that everyone expects. I’m not some crazed, pretty-princess as my bubbly demeanor, blonde hair, and impressive pin collection may lead you to believe.
I am a storyteller with a love of immersive theatre.
Disney doesn’t just write stories that touch your heart. They build worlds where you can be a part of the story yourself. That’s why when I was presented the opportunity to enter a world-building competition led by Walt Disney Imagineering, I jumped in head first.
Founded in 1991 by Marty Sklar, the WDI Imaginations Competition seeks out the next generation of Imagineers. In 2018, teams were challenged to select an actual abandoned “ghost town” from anywhere in the world and revitalize it. Entries had to consider the historic value, as well as have respect for the traditions and communities of the original and surrounding areas of the location.
I led a team of four as the head writer to create the concept of Moonville, a historic train town set in the 1870’s.
Some fun experiences for guests included a “time travelling” train that uses augmented reality, hiking trails, and blacksmithing classes. We really wanted our guests to feel as though they truly went back in time to see Moonville in its heyday.
After countless hours of writing, editing, and historical research, I am incredibly proud of the story and world we built, as well as our status as semifinalists.
