It’s a valid question: why should you hire a copywriter when you can just use ChatGPT or another AI writing service?
As a business owner myself, I can certainly see the allure in using free AI tools to help get work done quickly without breaking the bank. But it’s important to recognize that while you might be paying less monetarily, you are certainly paying the price in quality, relatability, and expertise.
1. Quality
Writing great copy is all about catching the fleeting attention of customers by speaking directly to their hearts, minds, and souls. Customers want to feel connected to brands they like, and to support their business because they support the people behind it.
You’re selling to real people, not to other robots. Real people will notice if your writing is choppy and robotic. And I’m sure you’ve noticed the difference yourself.
For example, have you ever used a chatbot that just skirts around your questions? Or told ChatGPT to write ten headline options, only for it to spit out the same sentence in various ways? Perhaps you’ve asked AI to write you a lengthy blog, and found it only met the word count by repeating the same three points over and over?
We’ve all been there. AI writing just doesn’t hit the mark. You know it, and your customers know it.
2. Relatability
Unlike AI, a real copywriter doesn’t simply write product descriptions or describe what your company does in layman’s terms on your website.
A real copywriter will:
- Tell your company story with a creative flair that makes your product or service stand out
- Recognize and uphold your company’s core values, as well as display them in your copy
- Elevate your brand by providing a consistent and relatable tone of voice
- Keep up with trends and the zeitgeist of your community
- Tailor your brand voice to be unique and specific to your niche/target customers
- Recognize and speak to your customer’s pain points to help drive conversions
And a real copywriter will do all that (and more) in a way that feels both effortless and relatable. Because in order to effectively connect to your audience, you need to think and write like them.
But these skills take time to master, and that leads us to my final top reason you should use human copywriters.
3. Expertise & The Human Experience
So what exactly makes humans more adept at writing and connecting to readers than a robot? One could say experience, but more specifically, it’s the human experience.
Personally, I have three years of in-house writing experience with BARK alone, and seven years writing experience in digital marketing. I elevated the brand of a small LGBTQ+ church, a two-billion-dollar insurance company, and a digital art gallery just to name a few.
I say all this not to brag, but to explain that my ten year writing career has taught me far more than how to be a technically good writer. My biggest takeaway was that successful copywriting comes from understanding each client’s brand, voice, and goals on a personal level.
It’s the human touch that turns your text to gold.
Effective marketing is all about community building and connection. I strive to find the individual voice and story for every client I work for and use that as my foundation. I’m passionate about weaving each piece of copy together to convey the overarching message of my client’s mission in creative ways. I’m quick with a well-placed pun, absolutely adore alliteration, and know what it takes to convince a customer to act. Can you say the same about AI?
Throughout my writing career, I also found it also takes thoughtful consideration of the human experience to determine not only what does work, but what DOESN’T work.
AI writing has a high margin for error when it comes to facts and faux-paws—making your brand voice sound odd, untrustworthy, and disingenuous. Real life experience and gut intuition are more valuable than any algorithm when it comes to avoiding marketing disasters. No one wants to get canceled for the insensitive mistakes of a robot.
